988

The National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved 988 as a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline. Just like we all know to dial 911 in an emergency, 988 will eventually be the number we all know to dial in a mental health emergency.

988 will become the 3-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to make it easier for Americans to access mental healthcare. This easy-to-remember number will improve suicide prevention efforts, increase access to mental health crisis support and services, and reduce the stigma around suicide and mental disorders.

988 is not currently active. It will be in service beginning July 2022. Until then, please continue to call the Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors if you or someone you care about is thinking of suicide or is experiencing emotional distress.
